Ever Widermann
Eva Widermann was born in Munich, Germany. She first started as a graphic designer. After a couple of years of working in the advertising industry, she decided to pursue becoming a freelance illustrator and concept artist in both traditional and digital style. Her work has been published in many books, games and magazines (Blizzard Entertainment, Disney Interactive, Lucas Film, Wizards of the Coast, Paizo Publishing and many more). Eve uses a lot of vibrant complemented colors together, this pulls me in. I loved how these colors makes everything looks so magical. So, I tried that with my dragon. |
Olly Moss
Olly Moss was commissioned by Marvel Entertainment executives Craig Kyle and Kevin Feige to create a poster for the cast of Thor. He also made the cover artwork for the 2011 video game Resistance 3,which was prompted to be a trailer and was created in a similar style. He also created the covers for J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter book series. He emphasizes background, hence why his style is so unique. He uses the same colors but different tones. This is what pulls me to his work. It gives me the sam feelings I get when I look at a beautiful landscape. That is why I used it for my background. |

Here I tried to figure out perfect color combo just like Eve Widermann.
|
|
Here is where I darken the whole sketch and draw the background and how I want it to look like.
Here I began to do the final colorings since I figured out how it will look like. The color combo is a mixture of red, green, blue, and black.
|
The colors are very dulled yet saturated. the background is one color but with many tones. I personally don't really like the background, since it was filled with paint. I should've used color pencil, like I did to the dragon. I really like the color contrast, the blue, green, red, black. It formally forms a dragon that could be seen in RPG games.
|
The colors are just different tones of one color. Everything on the FireWatch (a video game) poster is complementary. Using one color and different tones to make a picture is difficult. But Olly Moss nailed it. His colors are very saturated, yet dulled, and light. This created the levels of the background, it's almost as if one is looking at a real image of a fire-watch site with a filter.
|
The colors are vibrant. The colors are also pretty far apart from each other in the color wheel. The illustration is very neatly done. there's light reflection, and the hues are very saturated. The color combo is very complementary as well. The green, blues, purples are all near each-other in the color wheel, hence why the OC (original character) looks so natural. You can see the light and dark values, it almost makes a scene.

1) Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork. The background was inspired by Olly Moss, it is the same color but different tones (kinda) just like Olly Moss's art work. The color of the dragon is very contrasted compared to the background, it has opposite colors from the background. The colors I used in the dragon gives it a dark magical feel just like Eve Widermann's artwork.
2) What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration? Clearly both Olly Moss and Eve Widermann are very passionate of their work. Olly dropped learning literature to pursue his art, and Eve dropped designing advertisements to do what she loves. These two have a lot of love and passion for their art. 3) What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration? People are very very creative. Eve Widermann's art is amazing, however I know many other artist with that kind of approach. However, Olly Moss's style is so unique, I've never seen it before. His art really gives me a vibe and feeling just like how I'd feel looking at a landscape when I go hiking. It's very interesting and I love it! 4) What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? I originally wanted to do a video game theme style. So, I looked up who was the creator of FireWatch, an amazing game a played a while back. The illustration intrigued me, so when I saw it was Olly Moss, and his other work, I fell in love (with his art style) I had originally wanted to incorporate a Dragon, since many view them as a danger. I also used the dragon to represent the magic behind the piece. 5) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research? When I found out Eve Widermann started as a graphic designer and became a freelance illustrator, that inspired me a lot. She chased her dream to do what she loved and she became successful in it. This is not only and inspiration for my art but also for my life. When she did what she dreamt of she managed to work with many amazing companies, unlike before. |
